Frequently Asked Questions
What is Students H.E.A.L.?
Who can apply?
What is the difference between board members and traveling members?
When will the application process begin, and when is the actual brigade?
Do we have to take a class with this study abroad program, and what requirement does HEAL cover for graduation?
- HEAL is a non-profit student-run organization dedicated to touching the lives of others through healthcare and education
- We partner with other nonprofits to provide healthcare to those most in need
- Last year we fundraised over $17,000 to provide free health clinics and advanced medical care referrals to the rural communities of Sangkhlaburi, Thailand.
Who can apply?
- Our applications are open to current sophomore and junior nursing students and Doctor of Physical Therapy students ONLY.
- To clarify, nursing students must be currently enrolled in or have already passed N202 and N206 to apply for a leadership or traveling member position.
- Having the units to qualify you as a sophomore even if you are in your first year of college DOES NOT qualify you for this study abroad program.
What is the difference between board members and traveling members?
- Leadership board members: hold leadership responsibilities within the organization in addition to traveling member responsibilities
- Traveling members: responsible for contributing toward fundraising goals, facilitating transportation of medical supplies to the volunteer destination, and taking part in activities and events related to the organization
- Both: travel as a part of Students H.E.A.L. to Thailand to provide healthcare to those in need
When will the application process begin, and when is the actual brigade?
- Applications for general and traveling members will be conducted as follows:
- Applications open: May 15th
- Applications close: May 29th @ 11:59pm
- The new team will be notified by June 8th.
- The next brigade will take place in January of 2021 (over winter break) and lasts approximately 2 weeks
Do we have to take a class with this study abroad program, and what requirement does HEAL cover for graduation?
- This study abroad opportunity does cover your study abroad unit, but not the cultural diversity unit. The fees that you will have to pay for the program cost will cover the cost of one unit for the study abroad credit, and you must register for NURS-499 in the Spring semester following the brigade.
- You must, however, take a course on your own that will cover the cultural diversity (B) requirement; unlike HHS 350, this study abroad opportunity does not cover that portion of your graduation requirements, IT ONLY GIVES YOU THE STUDY ABROAD UNIT.
